Security advice

General online security

This web site has a number of security procedures in place to provide you with total confidence when discussing any aspect of your Barclaycard Business Account.

Information we receive from you over the Internet is treated as confidential and handled in accordance with our obligations under the Barclaycard Business agreement and appropriate legislation. We have devised a special secure session within this web site entitled 'Contact Us Securely', to ensure that card number information or personal details are protected.

General Online Security Issues

Below is a checklist to help you identify whether a web site is secure:

1. Check the website address

  • Secure areas will start with https, not http. https means that data is transferred in a secure way using encryption as opposed to http which is not encrypted. Information that is encrypted makes it difficult for other people to view the content.
  • Secure sites include security systems such as Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Secure Electronic Transaction (SET). SSL refers to the transporting of data. It is a method for disguising the information a web browser and a web server send to each other. One should use these secure sites wherever possible. If the web site gives you the option of using a secure checkout - always say yes.

2. Make sure you are using a secure browser

  • Your browser is the software that enables your computer to access the World Wide Web. Browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator (version 3 & above) will indicate whether the web site you are visiting is secure or not in the following ways:
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 & above show a padlock midway along the bottom of the browser screen. Closed padlock = Secure page. No lock = "read only".
    • Netscape Navigator 4.0 shows a padlock on the bottom left of the browser screen. Closed padlock = Secure page. No lock = "read only".
    • Netscape Navigator 3.0 shows a key on the left bottom of browser screen. Intact key = Secure Page. Broken key = Unsecure page.
  • Some web sites, such as AOL, do not show an icon, but do state if you're entering a secure area.
  • Information is secure because the browser scrambles your personal data before sending it, which prevents anyone else from reading it, and your details from being accessed or tampered with.

Barclaycard Business's Guarantee

Wherever you use your Barclaycard Business, including on the Internet, we guarantee you against fraud*, so you can feel safe in having the strength of our guarantee around every transaction.

If any unauthorised transactions appear on your account advise us immediately and we will suspend them for you while we investigate. Whatever happens, you'll never have to pay for transactions you didn't make.

* We guarantee you against fraud provided:

  1. The card is not used fraudulently with either your or any Authorised Users' knowledge;
  2. you or any Authorised User are not negligent in either giving or allowing anyone access to your account details or PIN resulting in the card or account details being used fraudulently.

Important Notes

We do urge you to use your card responsibly over the internet - avoid entering card details in an e-mail as the information maybe easily intercepted increasing the risk of fraudulent activity. Always check that the site is secure before proceeding.

If you register with a particular site, you may be asked to enter a username and a password. A password should be a combination of numbers and letters, and you should always take care to keep your passwords completely confidential.
